Adhitthana

Adhitthana is a practice of strong determination, commonly taught in the Vipassana tradition. The idea is simple: a still mind is supported by a still breath, and a still breath is supported by a still body.

At the beginning of the practice, make a gentle but firm resolve not to move the body until the practice ends. This includes avoiding small, unconscious movements like opening the eyes, adjusting your posture, scratching an itch, or shifting your hands and legs.

Remaining physically still helps train the mind to observe discomfort and restlessness with patience and equanimity. Though it seems simple, it can be a deeply transformative practice.
